Por: Redacción TiempoEl archivo bibliográfico lleva el nombre de un reconocido literato y periodista guatemalteco, quien convivió con el Premio Nobel de Literatura, Miguel Ángel Asturias y el reconocido autor Luis Cardoza y Aragón.
En un extremo de la zona 3 capitalina, entre casas particulares y comercios, se encuentra una de las pocas bibliotecas de consulta pública, que además es una fuente básica de bibliografía para estudiantes de primaria y secundaria.
Esa es la Biblioteca César Brañas, que forma parte de un proyecto de la Comisión de Extensión Universitaria de la Universidad de San Carlos (USAC), En la actualidad, el acervo consta de siete colecciones de libros que suman más de 70 mil volúmenes de una gran variedad de temas, aunque la mayoría son de literatura e historia.
Asimismo, el archivo tiene una completa hemeroteca que comprende cerca de 3 mil 500 títulos de revistas nacionales y extranjeras.
En un día corriente, acuden a la biblioteca decenas de estudiantes de escuelas e institutos cercanos, para hacer consultas sobre tareas escolares y trabajos de investigación.
De esta manera, un proyecto universitario beneficia a los estudiantes de una comunidad, en la que el acceso a internet y fuentes bibliográficas es limitado.
Historia
En 1980, la USAC adquirió de la familia Brañas la colección que constaba de 41 mil volúmenes y luego compró la casa donde funciona ahora la biblioteca, en la sexta calle 0-60 de la zona 3.
Posteriormente, en 1983, surgió el servicio de consulta interna, con la que se logró atender eficientemente las consultas sobre Historia y Literatura guatemalteca.
De acuerdo con un documento informativo de la institución, el archivo histórico contiene documentos escritos y gráficos entre los que merece destacar la correspondencia de Brañas con personalidades guatemaltecas del siglo XIX y XX.
Los registros fotográficos también son testigos de la relación de amistad que el escritor y periodista sostuvo con el Premio Nobel Miguel Ángel Asturias y el reconocido escritor Luis Cardoza y Aragón.
Servicios
La Biblioteca funciona de una forma muy eficiente, pues además de poner a disposición los textos, cuenta con servicios adicionales como el préstamo interno, consultas y elaboración de bibliografías.
Asimismo, se brinda el servicio de asesoría en investigación y fotocopiado.
